Aura Class of 2018
Yesterday, the Aura Wind Energy Catchup was held at the Aura Sandpit Meeting Room, with the 4 new Aura PhD cluster students, including Joyjit from the Big Data Analytics Research Group being welcomed into the team (with some coffee and cake as well!). The meeting was extremely productive for everyone, as various key people currently working in the offshore wind industry attended the meeting. Ben George, Director of Aura, Emma Platt-Lowe, RDI Strand Manager at Green Port Hull, Peter MacDonald, Head of Innovation Engineering at the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC) and all other colleagues formed an integral part of the meeting.
The new PhD students introduced themselves and discussed their research plans and the basic idea behind their research. Joyjit gave an informal presentation about his research plans towards using machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence for learning from historical data from offshore wind turbines, and using various concepts such as power curve modelling to identify incipient faults in the wind turbines. The research plan was appreciated by everyone present, including the senior officials from the industry.
As Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data forms an integral part of the turbines' data vital for applying machine learning, Joyjit raised this with Peter and it was wonderful to learn that OREC was willing to supply the data and facilitate working the the Digital team at OREC for his project. Joyjit even received an invitation to go to the Glasgow Office of OREC. Finally, everyone exchanged their contact details and it was planned that such meetings of the Aura Team will roughly happen every 6-8 weeks as this was really an amazing platform to exchange ideas. Moreover, the kind of networking with senior industry professionals in the area of offshore wind energy was an icing to the cake. Last but not the least, a lovely group photo of the newly enlarged Aura PhD cluster was taken by Emma!
